Mike Kuhns took his turn trying his newly matched key in Hesston College’s
giveaway car yesterday afternoon. To everyone’s surprise, it
started.
“Awesome,” he said.
Mike, an 11th grader who does not yet have his driver’s permit,
let alone license, has not decided whether he will take the Volkswagen
or the $1,000 cash alternative. To claim the car, he would have to
find a way to get it from Hesston to his home in Akron, Pa.
As a promotional venture, Hesston issued 1,400 pairs of numbered tags
to the convention youth. Tag holders who found their matching partner
received a key from a pile of 600, only one of which would start the
car. Mike’s key partner was Allison Helmuth.
Mike, who attends Lancaster (Pa.) Mennonite High, said he doesn’t
know where he will attend college.

MCC makes urgent call for school kits
Mennonite Central Committee representatives in Atlanta received an urgent
message this morning from relief workers in Iraq, who are requesting additional
school kits. Having made contact with more schools, MCC workers would like
to provide 40,000 more bags to children in the war-ravaged country in time
for the start of the school year in September.
A list of specific items and packaging instructions for the schools kits
– to contain spiral notebooks, pencils, a ruler, colored pencils and
an eraser – is available on the MCC web site: go to www.mcc.org and
click on “Iraq crisis response – donations welcome.”
MCC has already shipped 28,328 school kits to Baghdad from North America.
