| Moodle at DePauw: a Model for Managing Change | Lynda S. LaRoche, Assistant Director of Instructional & Learning Services and Moodle
Support Coordinator, and Michael Gough, Instructional Technologist and Coordinator of Student Technology Assessment, Resources & Training |
The transition from any highly adopted productivity software within an institution to another solution is always a challenge. We will examine the process in which DePauw University made its switch from Blackboard to Moodle. Implementation, training, and support strategies all had to be readjusted to meet the needs of the campus. All of this allowed faculty members, students, and staff to positively change how they teach, learn, and work. The manner in which DePauw was able to meet this challenge will be discussed as a model for other institutions looking to make similar changes. |
| Blackboard to Moodle: Following the Tools | Elizabeth Osika, Assistant Professor, Chicago State Univ. | If you are new to Moodle, one of the many issues you will face is locating the tools you have become comfortable with in Blackboard and trying to replicate their use in Moodle. This presentation will draw direct parallels from the most commonly used tools in Blackboard and provide instructions for locating them in Moodle, providing examples of how they can be used, and sharing best practices. |
| Behind the Scenes of Moodle | Lynda S. LaRoche, Assistant Director of Instructional & Learning Services and Moodle
Support Coordinator, and Michael Gough, Instructional Technologist and Coordinator of Student Technology Assessment, Resources & Training |
A learning management system can enhance teaching and learning in numerous ways, but what goes on behind the scenes so instructors and students can reap the benefits of Moodle? We will present DePauw's approach to supporting Moodle, including what we've learned about the care-and-feeding of an open-source system, our administrative policies and procedures, and then facilitate a discussion on best practices in Moodle administration. |
| Transitioning from Blackboard to Moodle | Julian Scheinbucks, Director of Distance Learning, Chicago State University, and Floyd Saner, Coordinator of Institutional Research, Educational Technology, and Assessment, Goshen College.
|
This presentation will provide information to institutions considering a transition from a Blackboard Course Management System to Moodle. The presentation will compare two diverse institutions and how they became involved in working together in the transition process. Both Chicago State University (CSU) and Goshen College (GC) were long-term Blackboard users. CSU is an urban university with a large minority population of students (~7000) and a very diverse faculty in the process of moving toward the use of Moodle. Goshen College is a rural midwest college with a diverse population of students and moved from Blackboard to Moodle about a year ago. Our presentation will outline the motivations for each institution for moving from Blackboard to Moodle, and the implementation of Moodle faculty and student training in preparation for this process. The process of transitioning from a hosted Blackboard institution to a hosted Moodle institution will be outlined and compared to the transitioning from a self-hosted Blackboard institution to a self-hosted Moodle institution. The presentation will contrast the differences in the path of the transition and will provide comparisons between surveys of faculty and students who experienced the process. |
