Teacher Training - Stipends Available

EnEd 585 - Community Education and Conservation Institute (CESI).
June 22 to 26, 2009

This week-long program from June 22 to 26, 2009 is co-sponsored by the Northwest Center for Sustainable Resources (NCSR) and will be held at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center in Wolf Lake, Indiana.

The Institute is an opportunity for you to build skills in using community-based (or place-based) educational practices related to natural resource conservation projects, and to develop curriculum materials for individual class activities, 1 to 2 week long units, semester courses or multi year programs. The long-term goal is that your class(s) will partner with public or non-profit conservation organizations to work on appropriate projects in wetlands, parks, rivers or other green spaces.

Prior to the Institute, four NCSR educator guides will be sent to participants for review. The guides highlight a variety of community-based classroom applications. During the institute, you will attend in-class workshops, travel to field sites, and explore project in local communities. Also, time will be allotted to adapt information from the NCSR guides to your local setting. In addition to our material we look forward to learning from the creative ideas shared by each participant.

All participants will receive a $200 stipend for their participation and for completing an educational product. This program is also eligible for Certification Renewal Units. The 30 contact hours during the week will provide 15 CRUs.

Three graduate credits are available through Goshen College. Graded assignments will compliment the work you do in CECI including pre-course reading, a summary paper and designing two curriculums. The tuition is $275.00 per credit or $825.00 total (you may apply your stipend to this tuition). Registration information is available upon request for EnEd 585 Community Education and Conservation.

(Biol 520) Instrumentation and Curriculum for Environmental Studies

All teachers who wish to borrow equipment from the mobile Environmental Laboratory must be trained in usage proceedures. Currently this is done through taking a 5 day summer class at Merry Lea. This class can be taken for college credit or CRUs.

We will also have training review sessions from time to time to give teachers a chance to practice with the equipment while Merry Lea staff is there to help.
