FAQs
Agroecology Summer Intensive (ASI)

What are the dates?  June 4 through August 3, 2012 (nine weeks).

What is the deadline for receipt of my completed application? April 30, 2012.

Where are the courses delivered? In the classrooms, gardens and environmental laboratory of Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center.

How many credits do I earn?  12 credits for the four courses of the ASI.

Can I take just part of the program?  Although it is recommended that the four courses making up the ASI be taken together as a unit, a two-course (soils and vegetable crops), 6-credit option is also available.

What alternatives are available if I do not need college credit?  A certificate program allows you to participate in the ASI, but instead of college credit you will receive a certificate of participation.

What does the ASI cost?  The cost for the 12-credit summer semester is $7,560 ($3,780 for the 6-credit option).  The cost for the certificate program is $1,560 ($780 for four and one half weeks).

Does this include room and board?  Housing is provided at Rieth Village and costs $878 for nine weeks (or $439 for four and one half weeks).  Food is at the expense of the student although fresh vegetables are available from the greenhouse and kitchen gardens.

Are scholarships available?  Several $2,000 scholarships are available ($1,000 for the 6-credit option).  Application forms are available on the Merry Lea website or by contacting Dr. Hess at dhess@goshen.edu.

I don’t attend Goshen College; must I enroll at GC in order to participate?  No, an application form is available on the Merry Lea website, and credits are transferable to your home institution.

What are the course prerequisites?   General biology and general chemistry are recommended.
