A Poem Inspired by Raylene Hinz-Penner's "Prayer for the End of the World"

Prayer for the End of College

Not as they promised us it would be in the high school counselor's office -
hundreds to a professor, but only a few A's - the other students shaken
and left on soggy earth to watch the bottomsides
of the brainy ones as they ascend, snatched by companies,
into the real world, regrets never dangling.

Let us rather be summoned by enthusiasm - the earth buoyant
with goals from our liftoff - drawn from our comas of habit,
our desires to achieve letting us feel our way
to a formation that clarify our beliefs. We would come
then, called, not running from our crazy lecture halls
from the first bombed exam to hide in the holes of confusion,
huddled in our uniform dorm rooms.

Give us a clear simple plan. Awaken in us a cause too bright
to bear and the floating of passionate minds as they take the air,
honest guides to our true calling in life.
