What is the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)?

The EIPA is a tool that evaluates the sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting skills of interpreters who work in primary and secondary school settings. It is not only used to evaluate interpreters who work with students and teenagers who use American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language, but also Manually-Coded English (MCE) and Pigdin Sign English (PSE).

What are the requirements for taking the test?

As with any profession, there are certain ethical standards educational interpreters must follow. Ethical standards guide decision-making and appropriate professional behavior in interpreting and in the school environment. The faculty in the Interpreter Preparation Program at Goshen College believe it is imperative that educational interpreters demonstrate knowledge of these ethical standards. Therefore, candidates are required to have passed the EIPA or RID Written Test in order to take the EIPA performance assessment at the Goshen College Testing Site. (Note: this may not be a requirement at other test sites.)
