Sanford C. Yoder, 1879-1975
contained in 29 boxes

Biographical Sketch

Sanford Calvin Yoder came to Goshen College in 1923 to be the president of the institution, but also to redeem an institution which was closed for one school year due to conflict over theology and lifestyle issues. Mennonites had questions about Goshen College in the early 1920s, but Sanford Yoder's leadership proved to be an aid in a highly controversial and emotional church crisis. Sanford was president from 1923 to 1940.

When Yoder began at Goshen College, he was not new to administration or education. He served from 1921 to 1944 as secretary of Mennonite Board of Missions. Ordained minister in Chappell, Nebraska in 1911 and bishop in 1913, Yoder was a leader of Mennonites in the mid-west. He was born near Iowa City and married Emma Stuzman in 1903. They had three children.
