Biographical Sketch

Joseph S. Shoemaker (1854-1936) was a Mennonite bishop, author, editor and evangelist.

1854 Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 1 to Veronica Shellenberger and Benjamin Shoemaker
1856 Moved to Covington, Ohio
1863 Moved to Freeport, Illinois; attended grade school there
1877 Married Elizabeth S. Brubaker on December 6, together they had 9 children Joseph was a poultry farmer and broom maker during his early married life
1878 Baptized at Freeport Mennonite Church; taught Sunday school there
1892 Ordained as a Mennonite minister in June; served as secretary of the Illinois Mennonite Conference until 1902
1899 Became editor of the Advanced Lesson Quarterly
1900 Appointed chairman of the Compiling Committee for Church and Sunday School Hymnals; wrote three hymns for the new hymnal
1902 Ordained as a Mennonite bishop for Northern Illinois congregations
1905 Appointed President of the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board
1908 Appointed Board President of the Mennonite Publication Board
1912 Assisted J. S. Hartzler in writing and publishing Missions in the Orient and Observations by the Way
1917 Worked for conscientious objectors who were drafted as soldiers
1920 Served on the board of Mennonite Missions and Charities
1925 Wrote The Ideal Christian Home
1931 Wife Elizabeth died on September 25
1936 Died at home on February 6 in Dakota, Illinois
