Exploring a career

The Good Library has several hundred books on career-related topics located in the Career Resources area of the Reference Room. To find career advice, search the Good Library Catalog. Type vocational guidance and choose "subject keyword." To focus your search, add your field of interest to the words, e.g.,

  • vocational guidance science
  • vocational guidance business
  • vocational guidance environmental

Or type job hunting or vocational guidance in Browse and choose "subject."

 

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, Vols 1-5 (Career HF 5381 .E52 2008)

Vol 1 includes Career Exploration suggestions, information, web sites, and description of career fields.
Vol 2-5 are alphabetical listings of hundred of jobs and professions; including the work environment, requirements, employment outlook, and more.

Occupational Outlook Handbook (produced by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Specific information on occupations (education, earnings, prospects, conditions)
Labor market trends - sample of information available at this site

America's Career InfoNet

A general site with information including fastest growing, most openings, largest employer, declining employment, highest paying jobs by state
Explore careers and industries and education options

Career Voyages (collaboration between U.S. Dept of Labor and U.S. Dept of Education)

Provides information on high growth, in-demand occupations along with the skills and education needed to attain those jobs
Note the "Career videos" under "other stuff" - short videos about specific occupations with real people talking about their job

O-Net Online (developed by Employment & Training Administration of U.S. Dept. of Labor)

Interactive site with a database that defines key features (knowledge, skills, & abilities) of workers as well as activities and tasks of occupations
Includes data collected by occupation analysis and updated at least twice a year with surveys of the working population
