Bible Study

The study of biblical passages, using the Bible itself, background materials, and commentaries.

BibleWorks

BibleWorks is a Bible software program containing the original biblical languages and many translations. It comes with a variety of lexicons, dictionaries, and other research tools for all levels of users. For user assistance: BibleWorks Basics and BibleWorks Tutorial.

BibleWorks is available on campus lab computers (Schertz, Library and AD21 labs) under "Start/Programs."

Versions

English versions of the Bible are on the shelves at BS170-BS192, BS192, and parallel versions at BS2025. These are located in the Reference Room and in the circulating collection (the stacks).

To locate various (English) translations in the online catalog,

  • Go to the Basic Search page, lower half.
  • In the Browse box, type "Bible English" (caps optional) and select the Title index.
  • Each version (and date if publication) is listed ("Authorized"=KJV). Click the link to see the exact titles of the version.
  • For books about the different versions, browse the Subject index: "Bible English versions---(particular version").

Spanish versions are at BS29, Mandarin at BS315.C35, and Japanese at BS315.J35.

Commentaries

Commentaries give interpretations of specific text. There are one volume and multi-volume commentaries. There are commentaries on the entire Bible, on parts of the Bible and on the individual books of the Bible. Multi-volume commentaries are kept as a set in the Reference Room and duplicate copies of the same set are usually separated by title in the stacks.

Concordances are works that list the words of the Bible and give the passages where each word occurs.

Version 2.1 of the oremus Bible Browser, (13 February 2007), searches the New Revised Standard Version and King James Versions of the Bible, along with several psalters. Search Bible scriptures or words or phrases, with the capacity to limit to books or ranges of books..

Bible Gateway
A free service for reading and researching scripture online - various languages and translations except the NRSV.

Bible Tutor: Basic Level
The Overview provides a "big picture" chronological summary of the Old and New Testament Biblical narrative. A Bible Books page sets the books in larger groupings, and provides brief summaries of the books with links to explanations of key terms. People links alphabetically to Biblical characters. Dates links to very basic dates in Biblical history. Places links to maps, as well as pictures of locations with Biblical explanations. General Knowledge links to terms not fitting in the other sections, with illustrations and Biblical explanations.
