Books

Look at subject-specific encyclopedias to make sure you know the background of your topic, learn the words to use in searching for articles, and find any names associated. Encyclopedias also will have references to be pursued.

Encyclopedias: Search Library Catalog (Advanced Search)

Limit to "Reference Collection" for specialized encyclopedias

Keyword: (your topic) - think general/broad

Library Catalog
Search for books by entering keyword(s) - may choose subject keyword or title keyword.

  • When you find one that looks good, look at the subject headings. Click on a subject heading that corresponds to your topic.
  • Check for other books on the shelf near your selected title.
  • Use the Index or Table of Contents to be more specific to your topic.

World Catalog
Use the same techniques to search WorldCat as you did the library catalog.
When you locate a book in World Catalog that is not in the Goshen College library, use the icon to request the book through Interlibrary Loan ILL

 

Articles

EBSCO databases

  • Select databases specific to your topic area.
  • NOTE: words typed in the same box will be searched as a phrase.
  • Consider changing the "Select a Field" drop-down menu to focus your search.
  • Use the left column to narrow your search or add your own words in another search box.
  • Limit your search to Academic (Peer Reviewed) journals.
  • Investigate the "Subject Terms" or "Thesaurus" tab if not finding what you want.
  • Add articles of interest to your folder by clicking on the folder icon, on the right. From top of page click "Folder has items" to print or email yourself the items in your folder.
  • Order articles that the library does not have either in print or full text electronically through Interlibrary Loan.

  • background
  • current situation
  • bibliography
