Accessing Your M: Drive Over the Internet

At Goshen College, it's possible to securely transfer files between your home and campus computers using your web browser. So if you're working at home and discover you forgot to email yourself a file you wanted to work on, just open your browser, connect to your M: drive, and download the file to your computer. Or if you're on the road, you can dialup and connect to your M: drive from anywhere as long as you have web access. (Note: this is not the same as working on your M: drive from your campus computer; it simply allows you to transfer files back and forth between computers.)

To upload or download a file between your home directory (M: drive) and your local computer (C: or A: drives):

  1. Open your web browser (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.).
  2. Surf to https://websamba.goshen.edu or choose the "M: drive" link on the On Campus page.
  3. The first time you do this, you will get an ominous-sounding warning. You should "accept the certificate permanently" and continue on.
  4. At the login screen, type in your email username and password.

Downloading a file

Upon successfully logging in, you will see a listing of your home directory on gcfile (M: drive). To locate and download a file:

  1. Click on the folders links to move deeper into the file system. Use the Back Button to retrace your steps.
  2. When you find the document, click on it to download it. In the Save As window, locate where you want to store the document (normally on your C: drive; on a Mac you could choose your Desktop or your Macintosh HD).

Uploading a file

To upload a file, login as above, and find your way to the folder that you wish to upload to. Then:

  1. Drop down the menu at the top of the screen, select "New file (upload)" (see picture at left) and click "OK".
  2. On the next screen, click the "Browse" button, and locate and select the file you wish to upload.
  3. Then click the "OK" button next to the browse button.
