Downloading Files From The Web


A world of software is available to you on the web. Utilities, multimedia resources, Windows add-on, demo software and games are available for free. Once the process of downloading is learned it becomes an easy tool to help you create a computer environment that best serves your needs.

Downloadable Software:

SHAREWARE: Software which will allow you free use for a trial period and then asks you to send them a registration fee if you decide to keep it.

FREEWARE: Software which is yours to keep, no charge.

How to Download Files from the Web

Step 1: Create a place to keep your files

  • Click on Start -> Windows Explorer
  • Off of C: drive create a directory called Download
  • Click on C: drive.
  • Right click in the right window anywhere in the white area.
  • Select New Folder off of the menu that pops up.
  • Type Download and hit enter.

Step 2: Go to the download web site

For our Example we are going to download Ad-aware - an adware removal .

  • Start Mozilla browser or Internet Explorer:
  • Under location type the address of the company you wish to download from: http://www.download.com/

Step 3: Choose the program you wish to download

  • Click on Internet category
  • Click on Adware Removal tools
  • Click on RE-SORT BY: Name
  • Click on Ad-aware 6.0
  • The browser will pop up a Save As window. Go to your Download directory.
  • Click on Save

Step 4: Run the installation program

  • Close down all windows except for Windows Explorer.
  • Using your Windows Explorer browse to your download directory.
  • Find the file you just downloaded (aaw6181.exe) and double click on it.
  • See Note #2 below
  • Walk through the installation procedure by answering the questions it asks and clicking on Next to continue to the next step.
  • When the program is finished installing it will have created an option on your start menu for you to start the program
  • Click on Start -> Programs -> Ad-aware to start the program.

Notes:

  1. It will take a lot longer for you to download things at home then at school. Goshen College's Internet connection is several times faster than your home computer's modem.
     
  2. Sometimes there is an extra step in the process to install a program. Sometimes a large program will come compressed and you will need to ‘unzip’ it before you can install it. To unzip it you will need a decompression program on your computer (StuffIt is recommended and you can get a decompression program from most of the sites listed on this sheet above). It is at the point above that you will need to use the decompression program to unzip the files. Once the files are unzipped you need to find the file called Setup or Install and run the installation program. If you have a templated Windows system, StuffIt Expander is already installed and will decompress the program for you.
