FACULTY ORIENTATION TO GOSHEN COLLEGE CAMPUS TECHNOLOGY


 
Goshen College offers a wide variety of technology services to faculty for both academic and administrative use. This document highlights services you, as a new faculty member, should be aware of.

Your Username and Password

You have username/password access to a variety of network services and software applications. You can change your password whenever you want, but please do not share it with others. Keeping your password secret will guard your personal account information and protect your documents and email stored on the network.

Support

ITS operates a professionally-staffed Help Desk from 8-5 Monday through Friday. Student Help Desk support is available during evening hours except Saturday. The Help Desk is located in Schertz Computing Center in the basement of the Union Building and can be reached by phone at x7700 or email at .

Office Computing

If your contract is .6 FTE or greater, ITS will supply a recent model computer for your office at no cost to your department. See ITS hardware policy for more information.

Software

Your office computer comes with a wide range of useful software, ranging from Microsoft Office to Adobe Creative Suite.  If there are software tools that you need for teaching or other tasks, contact the for licensing and installation information.  If you want to purchase software for home use, GC has agreements with Microsoft, Adobe and other vendors for reduced cost licenses available through E-Academy.

Course Web Pages

GC offers Moodle for course web management. All courses have already been created for your use.  Class rosters are automatically maintained. ITS staff are available to assist you in getting started adding materials to your courses. Contact the Help Desk for assistance.

Email

Office PC's come equipped with Thunderbird for email. Office Mac's use MacMail. When you are on the road, you can access your email via the Roundcube webmail client at mail.goshen.edu

Web

GC uses the Firefox web browser; Internet Explorer is also supplied. All employees also have access to web publishing space on www.goshen.edu. DreamWeaver, a web page editor, is available on your office computer. Caravel, a web content management system, is also used for many departmental websites.  Contact if you need secure areas on the webserver.

Calendar/ Scheduling

Goshen College offers campus-wide calendar/scheduling called Zimbra Calendar. Calendar allows you to schedule people and resources on campus more easily. Windows and Mac clients are available or you can access your schedule via the web at https://mail.goshen.edu/zimbra/#2. Log in with your username and LDAP (email) password.

File service

Data is stored on a central "M: drive", where it is backed up nightly and available from any computer you log into. You can access your M: drive from home via a web browser at https://webfile.goshen.edu using your LDAP (email) password.

GC Online

GC Online gives access to an increasing array of secure web services at gconline.goshen.edu, from setting mail spam filters and vacation messages to class rosters and advising information.

Listservs

GC hosts a number of listservs. You can subscribe to a listserv from within GC Online. Listservs are automatically created for your courses in Moodle. If you want a custom listserv created, contact the Help Desk.

Classroom Computing

GC has more than a dozen multimedia classrooms equipped with computing, projection and multimedia equipment. If your course requires this sort of technology, contact the Registrar to ensure that your class is scheduled in the appropriate space. Orientation for our technology classrooms is available and encouraged by ITS-Media. If you have a classroom emergency involving technology call x7700.

Printing

There are regional laser printers placed throughout the campus which you can use at no cost. If you wish to have an inkjet printer, that will be a departmental expense.

Specialty Printing & Equipment

Schertz Computing Center houses both a large format (11 x 17) laser printer and a color laser printer which are available to faculty members. ITS also offers a wide variety of equipment including scanners, slide scanners, OMR scanner, CD/DVD recorders, digital cameras, DV cams, etc. for faculty use.

Media Services

ITSMedia, located on the south end of the Union, provides equipment checkout, and a wide range of Audio/Video services and support. 

Test and Form Scanning

A Remark Office Test and Form Scanner is available. For training or assistance, contact Vickie Miller at phone x7700.

Online Resources

The Good Library has a rich collection of online resources, including bibliographic and full-text databases. See www.goshen.edu/library/

Bookstore

The campus bookstore web site permits credit card purchasing of books and GC apparel, via Follett Publishing's secure e-commerce server. The Bookstore also offers software with academic discounts for most titles.
