Goshen College offers a wide variety of technology services to members of the GC community. This document highlights services you, as a new adult student, should be aware of.

Your Username and Password. You have username/password access to a variety of network services and software applications. You can change your password whenever you want, but please do not share it with others. Keeping your password secret will guard your personal account information and protect your documents and email stored on the network.

Computing Code of Conduct. Your use of the Goshen College computing environment implies your acceptance of the guidelines found at http://www.goshen.edu/its/Policies.

Lab Computing. There are three public student computer labs on campus. The main lab is Schertz Computer Center (SCC) in the basement of the Union Building. The Mac Design lab is there, too. The Library Lab is located in the Good Library, and we also have a lab in the Administration Building in AD21. These labs are also used as classrooms, so please check the schedule outside of each lab to see if a class is in session. Staff and/or Student Technology Assistants are on duty most days from 8am-midnight to help you with computing problems or questions. SCC and AD21 have handicapped-accessible workstations. Information on hours and equipment can be found at http://www.goshen.edu/its/Facilities. In addition to these labs, you may use NC12 in the Newcomer Building when classes are not in session.

Printing. Laser printers are available in all labs. DAES students receive $25 of free printing when their account is created. You must purchase additional print credit from ITS if you run out before you complete your course of study. Normal laser printing costs 10¢ per page. Schertz Computing Center also houses a large format (11x17) laser printer and a color laser printer. Cost to print on those printers is 20¢ and 25¢, respectively.

File service. Every person must have a username and password to be able to login to the Goshen College network and use the software on campus. You receive your username and initial password from DAES. Logging in gives you access to space reserved for you on our network file server. This appears to you as your M:\My Documents folder, which is only accessible by you. ITS backs up your M:\My Documents folder daily, but we also recommend that you make an extra backup of your critical files onto a floppy, CD or flash drive. The M:\Public folder is also available for sharing files with others on campus. However, any files placed in the Public folder can be read, modified and/or deleted by anyone with a GC account. Be sure to logout of your account to protect the security of your files.

Note: You can access your M: drive from home via a web browser at https://websamba.goshen.edu.

Email. Goshen College encourages the use of webmail, which can be accessed by using a web browser and going to mail.goshen.edu. Using webmail, you can easily access your email on or off campus. An important benefit of using this service is that all incoming email gets scanned for viruses and spam before it gets to you. If you wish to forward your email account to an off-campus email service, such as AOL or Hotmail, you can do so through GConline. Note that if you use non-GC email services, you are more susceptible to infecting your computer with viruses.

GConline. GConline is a secure, web-based portal to on-campus services. By logging in with your username and password, you may check your grades, course history and account balances; change your password or vacation email message; apply for graduation; or download antivirus software. See gconline.goshen.edu.

Web. GC uses the Firefox web browser. Internet Explorer is also available. All students have access to web publishing space on www.goshen.edu. In a PC lab you can access your personal web pages at M:\Web Pages\mypages. In a Mac lab, you can mount your web space through Appleshare.

Listservs. GC hosts a number of listservs. You can subscribe to a listserv from within GConline.

Online Resources. The Good Library has a rich collection of online resources, including bibliographic and full-text databases. See www.goshen.edu/library/.

Bookstore. The campus bookstore web site permits credit card purchasing of books and GC apparel, via Follett Publishing's secure e-commerce server. The Bookstore also offers software with academic discounts for most titles.

Helpdesk. For technology assistance or questions, call the Helpdesk at 535-7700 or email .
