Getting on ResNet: Mac OS 8.x and 9.x

If you have Mac OS X, see our Mac OS X instructions.

If you have a Mac running MacOS 8.x or 9 with Internet Setup Assistant, you can use the Internet without installing any additional software. Here's how:

Need more MacOS Help? See Macintosh Help Pages in the Help Desk section.
  1. Locate the Internet Setup Assistant, typically located in the Assistants folder, and open it.

  2. The Internet Setup Assistant will ask a series of questions which you will need to answer with responses:
    • Would you like to set up your computer to use the Internet? YES
    • Do you already have an Internet account? YES
    • What would you like to name this configuration? My Dorm Room (or any answer will do here.)
    • How will you be connecting to the Internet? NETWORK
    • Do you want to use Apple Remote Access to connect to the Internet? NO
    • Is there an IP address for this configuration? NO
    • What is the protocol used for this configuration? OTHER
    • What is the DNS address for this configuration? 199.8.232.100
    • What is the Domain Name for this configuration? goshen.edu
    • What is the email address for this configuration? You should have received a sheet with this information via campus mail. It is typically in 'firstml' form, so that Eric John Yoder would be ericjygoshen.edu
    • What is the e-mail password for this configuration? We recommend leaving this blank.
    • What is the e-mail host for this configuration? mail.goshen.edu
    • What is the newsgroup host for this configuration? Leave this blank. We recommend the Google web site to people interested in Usenet discussion groups.
    • Do you use proxy servers for Internet connections? NO
    • To finish the installation click the Go Ahead Button

  3. To begin using your Internet connection, you will need one more piece of information -- your hardware address, a 12 digit number stored in the TCP/IP Control Panel. To find it, do the following:
    • From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels.
    • Locate the TCP/IP control Panel and open it by double-clicking on it.
    • From the File Menu, choose "Get Info".
    • Write down your hardware address on a slip of paper. You'll need this for step four.
    • Close up the TCP/IP control panel.

  4. Launch Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. You'll be automatically sent to the ResNet Registration Page. Take the following steps to finish the installation:
    • Read the instructions and click the Register Me! Button
    • Enter your e-mail username and password.
    • Read the Computing Code of Conduct and click Agree
    • Enter your room number and 12-digit hardware address (with no spaces) and click Confirm.

  5. Restart your computer and surf the Web!
