Glossary of Terms


User ID            

The name you use to log on to any lab computers.




Resnet

High speed networking system in the residence halls that enhances the capabilities of students’ personal computers.




GCFile

The server where all your documents are stored




WebFile
  WebFile is a way for you to access your GCFiles using a web browser



M Drive  

A private drive where you can store and retrieve your documents on any lab computers or your personal computer. Your M drive will be invisible to others




Public Drive
  A Public drive where you can store and retrieve your documents on any lab computers and your personal computer.



W Drive
  A private drive that stores your webpage contents



GConline
  The service website designed for GC students and employees. Services include changing GC account password, checking academic status, enter timecard, etc.



Blackboard   The learning management system used by GC to help faculty and student collaborate and communicated outside the normal classroom hours. Provided an electronic means of materials dissemination, grading, testing and discussion.  This particular product was replaced by Moodle in the summer of 2008.

   
Print Balance
   The amount of printing that's available to you
     
Webmail
  A way to check your GC Email using a web browser
     
Eudora
  Commonly used software at GC for checking Emails
     
Samba
  GC File



ListServe
   The system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic mailing list on the Internet



POP

Short for Post Office Protocol, a protocol used to retrieve Email from mail server.



SMTP

Simple Mail Transfre Protocol, for sending Emails messages between servers. SMTP authentication ensures that only GC users are allowed to send Email through GC Mail server



SSL

Secure Sockets Layer encrypts communications between the Email servers and your computers so your password is not sent in clear text
