Glossary of Terms

Eudora                       Commonly used software at GC for checking Emails. Eudora has now been replaced by Thunderbird for all current faculty and staff users. It is now only supported for retired users.

GCFile                        The server where all your documents are stored

GCOnline                   The service website designed for GC students and employees. Services include changing GC account password, checking academic status, enter timecard, etc.

IMAP                         Internet Message Access Protocol, the recommended protocol for retrieving e-mail messages at Goshen College

ListServ                      The system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic mailing list on the Internet.

Moodle                       GC’s new replacement for blackboard.  Moodle is a free, open-source course management system for students and faculty.

M Drive                      A private drive where you can store and retrieve your documents on any lab computers or your personal computer. Your M drive will be invisible to others.

POP                            Short for Post Office Protocol, a protocol used to retrieve Email from mail server. POP was used with the Eudora client, but Thunderbird uses IMAP instead.

Print Balance             The amount of printing that's available to you.  You can add to your print balance by coming to the ITS department under the union and talking to the student assistant at the ITS helpdesk.

Public Drive               A public drive where you can store and retrieve your documents on any lab computers and your personal computer.

Resnet                         High speed networking system in the residence halls that enhances the capabilities of students’ personal computers.

Samba                        GC File

SMTP                         Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, for sending Emails messages between servers. SMTP authentication ensures that only GC users are allowed to send Email through GC Mail server.

SSL                             Secure Sockets Layer encrypts communications between the email servers and your computer so your password is not sent in clear text.

User ID                       The name you use to log on to any lab computers.

WebFile                      WebFile is a way for you to access your GCFiles using a web browser

Webmail                     A way to check your GC Email using a web browser.

Zimbra                       GC’s new webmail and calendar client.
