Network

Where can I get wireless connection on campus?

Wireless coverage is approaching 100% in academic buildings, most green spaces and     dorm lounges. See wireless coverage map.

Is wireless connection available to visitors?

Yes. The wireless network is open, so any 802.11x-equipped laptop can connect. This is a courtesy we want to extend to our guests as long as it is not abused.

How do I post my webpages online?

GC provides web server service to all students and employees.  To access your web space, go to \\\www\yourusername.  To edit the content of your web site space, go to  M:\Web Pages/mypages.  Inside this folder should be a file called index.html.  You can edit this file in Dreamweaver, or another html editing program.

You can post your pages online from an off-campus site (such as Merry Lea) using an application called WS_FTP95  LE, which can be found under InternetApps under Start menu, on any lab computers, or can be downloaded online here. You can also map your W drive, and manage your web content there.

How do I set up a network printer?

How do I register my X-box or PS2?

Click here for instructions on finding your gaming system's mac address.  Once you have the mac address, contact the Help Desk between 8am-5pm, Monday -Friday with the information. A record will be entered in DNS, after that the x box should work.

Where do I check my GC Emails?

GC email service is available to all GC students, faculty and staff. You can check email using Zimbra, Thunderbird, or other software you prefer. To use Zimbra, which is a preferred method for students, go to http://zimbra.goshen.edu. Enter your GC username and password.

How do I use GC Email filter?

Go to GC Online. Under Personal Services, click on spam filter. Set the filter to level 7. If you are still receiving spam, decrease the setting incrementally.

How do I sign up to various GC email lists?

Go to GC Online. Under Personal Services, click on Email List Services/Subscriptions. Choose the email lists you want to receive messages from.

How do I open an attachment?
Many viruses come via email attachments!

To open an attachment on a pc:

• Right click on the attachment
• Select Save to disk
• Scan it for viruses
• If virus-free, open it with compatible software.
  (Usually, all you need to do is click on the file and as long as you have compatible software on your computer, it will open automatically for view.)

What should I do to block Popups?

If you use IE, switch to Mozilla Firebox, http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/. Also, make sure your browser is set to block popups.

How do I get rid of Cookies?

Check your Browser Settings; you can usually delete cookies there.

How do I get rid of spyware?

Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot are both free programs that get rid of common malware. You can find them at www.download.com.

How do I prevent spyware from infecting my system?

Both Ad-aware and Spybot come with immunizers that prevent known spyware from installing. WinPatrol can also hold off suspicious program installations. When you install programs, make sure to read all the installer screens, especially the license agreement.

How do I stay away from viruses?

Don't open an Email attachment if you are not certain of where it came from. Don't download any software on the web without researching its origin, use and reviews. Always update your Anti-virus software. Sophos and updates are available to GC users.

File management

How do I map the M Drive on my computer?

Go Windows Explorer, Under Tools | Map Network Drive, Choose M as the drive name, and \\gcfile\USERNAME as folder name.

How do I map the W Drive on my computer?

In the Start menu, go to GC Utilities and select "map W drive."  This will map your W drive to the default location  \\\www\your user name here.  An example would be \\\www\elijahjm.

Does ITS back up any of my files?

All recently modified My Documents files are backed up nightly and are available in the Yesterday folder under M drive. Department files are also backed up.   Files on the Public drive are not backed up.

How do I access the M drive using a browser?

Go to https://websamba.goshen.edu/ and enter your username and password.

May I store content on the Public drive?

Yes you may. Storing content on the Public drive makes it convenient for GC users to exchange and share information. Since it is a Public drive, you would not want to store confidential files there. Also, the Public drive is purged once or twice a semester, so be sure you make a copy of any important content.

What software can faculty, staff and students purchase at an educational discount?

Faculty, staff and students can purchase a wide array of software at an education discount.

Who is eligible to purchase software at an academic discount?

Employees: Only currently employed faculty and staff are eligible to purchase discounted software through the above sources.

Students: Only students currently enrolled in classes at Goshen College are eligible to purchase software at an educational discount through the above sources.  If you are a newly enrolled student, you will be eligible to purchase software on your first day of class at Goshen College.

Computer Hardware

My computer does not start. It shuts itself off a few seconds after I press the 'On'  button.

The power supply is likely to be bad. Contact your computer dealer.

Does ITS recycle old computer parts?

We recycle printer cartridges. We also give away old but still usable computer parts.

How do I burn a CD/DVD?

All PCs in Schertz Lab have CD/DVD burners. The burning software used on those computers is Nero. Click here for instructions.  You can also burn disks from a Mac computer.  You can purchase disks from the compus bookstore.

Why can’t I log on using my own username and password?

Is your Cap-Lock turned on? Are you a current GC student? Does the computer have network connection? For lab computers, is it set to log on to “Goshen_College”?

When I tried to log on, error message says "Domain Goshen_College Not Available'

Wait for a minute and try to log on again. Do not try to log back on right after closing the error message. If it keeps occurring, call the helpdesk

Where can I use my GC username and password?

Your GC username and password works for WebMail, Thunderbird, GConline (and GConline based applications), GC samba server (GCFile), Moodle, logging onto any lab computers on campus.

Am I allowed to use a GC computer as a visitor?

You will need to request a temporary guest account from ITS.
