Duplex Printing

July 2007

Duplex printing is the process of printing on both the front and the back side of a single sheet of paper.  Currently, only a limited set of printers on campus are set up to be able to do this without manual intervention.  Among them are: SCC-ColorLaser, SCC Laser, Lib-Lab-Laser, and any of the smaller HP-1320 printers set up in study rooms and small labs.

To print a two or more page document in duplex mode, you must change one setting when printing.

    1.  From the print dialog, be sure you have selected a printer capable of printing in duplex mode, like the SCC Laser, and then click the properties button beside the print queue name.

    2.   A new dialog box opens, click the "Layout" tab and then select which edge you would like to have the paper flip.  Most likely you will want the paper to flip on the long edge for documents printing in the standard portrait form.  Click "OK" and you'll return to the main print dialog where you can then choose number of copies and other options before deciding to print.

Note: Be careful not to grab the paper as it is being printed until it is ejected completely into the tray.  In duplex printing mode the paper is partially ejected before it is pulled back in to print on the other side.
