Discovering the Science of the Environment
The IUPUI Discovering the Science of the Environment program is an experiential, inquiry-based, outdoor laboratory focused science education program for 4th-9th grade classes in central Indiana (Boone, Hamilton, Madison, Hendricks, Marion, Hancock, Morgan, Johnson, and Shelby counties).
Utilizing a mobile resource trailer equipped with interactive technology tools, web interface, and GIS mapping capabilities, the DSE program travels to your school to provide FREE educational programming at school ground natural areas. All programs are aligned to Indiana State Standards in science and mathematics and Excellence in Environmental Education - Guidelines for Learning (Pre K - 12) and resources, scientific equipment and measurement probes are provided by DSE.
Professional Institute
The IUPUI Discovering the Science of the Environment institute will assist teachers in the establishment, maintenance, and use of outdoor laboratories on school sites and provide several practical examples and tools that teachers can incorporate into their environmental science education program. This workshop will be appropriate for schools that have existing outdoor labs / school ground natural areas or for those who would like to develop outdoor learning programs. All curriculum materials have been aligned to address Indiana State Academic Standards for Science, Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies and customized for Indiana natural areas. IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science staff provide support through the school year to assist schools with outdoor laboratory experiences and curriculum development. Upon completion of the institute, each participating team will be eligible to apply for grant funding from the Dr. Laura Hare Charitable Trust to fund outdoor laboratory program activities related to the team action plans developed during the institute.
The institute will be held at the Eagle Creek Park Earth Discovery Center June 23-27, 2008. The program is open to teams of three to five teachers from the same school in grades four through nine. There is no cost to attend the institute. Participants can elect to enroll in three graduate credits in science or education. There is an application process to complete. To learn more about DSE, the institute and how to apply, please visit the website below.
