Urban Forestry Research Field Assistants - Twin Cities
Summer 2008
Positions: Multiple summer undergraduate research assistants. The position is full time
(40 hr/week) with competitive wages based on experience.
When: Summer 2008 – Mid –to-late May through August.
Where: Twin Cities, MN. Sampling will be conducted in Ramsey County and Anoka County.
What: Selected candidates will join our team working on an urban/peri-urban forestry research project.
This is a great opportunity to gain experience with different field techniques and to work with an
interdisciplinary group. The job involves 90% field work and 10% indoor work, mainly data entry and analysis.
Responsibilities: Forest inventory following USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) methods,
including measurements of canopy structure, tree height and diameter, leaf area index, biomass,
soil sampling, and basic data analysis. Selected candidates will need their own transportation
(travel costs associated with the research will be reimbursed).
Qualifications: Coursework or strong interest in forest measurements, urban forestry, and/or
ecosystem ecology. Experience with GPS/GIS is a plus. Must be hard worker, a team player, and
able to work independently.

LaPorte County Parks Internship
Summer -12 weeks maximum, 40 hrs per week
Flexible starting and ending dates
Stipend of $1200 for 12 weeks paid monthly
Housing provided on park property free of charge if needed.
3 Component Internship
Duties of Naturalist and Programming Component
-Assists with school environmental education
programs, public programs, festivals and day camps.
-Maintains and updates a bulletin board each month.
-Assists with property upkeep, including stocking brochures,
housekeeping, and minor trail maintenance.
-Assists in maintenance and upkeep of the live animals.
Works Nature Center, greets public, and answers phones.

Qualifications for Internship
-Must be at least sophomore status working
towards a degree in a natural science or related field.
-Possesses or has ability to learn basic knowledge of principles and
techniques of Programming.
-Possesses or has ability to learn basic computers and computer
programs; such as Word, Excel, Internet Explorer.
-Possesses or has ability to learn effective communication skills both
oral and in written.
-Must be able to work independently at times.
-Must have valid drivers license and own transportation from housing to
work.
-Must have physical ability to lead hikes on trails and complete other
noted duties.
-Possesses willingness and has ability to learn a variety of skills
related to Parks.
-Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
-Must be enthusiastic and a team player.

SAVE THE DUNES CONSERVATION FUND
Michigan City, Indiana
Stewardship and Restoration Coordinator
Stewardship and Restoration Coordinator. Regional grassroots
conservation organization in the Indiana Dunes region of Northwest
Indiana seeks self-motivated, versatile professional for full-time,
entry level position as Stewardship and Restoration Coordinator.
Candidate should have experience in resource management and habitat
restoration and demonstrate a commitment to team-building. Field
experience a must.
Responsibilities include: Successful applicant
will establish a Land Stewardship and Restoration Program for Save the
Dunes Conservation Fund. Duties will include all aspects of habitat
restoration and land management activities on lands owned or managed by
Save the Dunes Conservation Fund. The person will also be responsible
for developing and implementing resources management plans for
properties, as well as identifying future funding opportunities to
continue the position. While this is an entry level position, there
will be an opportunity for growth and expansion of duties in the
future. Must be available for occasional evening and weekend meetings
and activities.
Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in
natural resource management or related conservation field. Advanced
degree preferred. Proven effectiveness with conservation and land
managing organizations and non-profits desired. Involvement in
community activities a plus. Starting salary is $24,000 with
advancement possible. Health and retirement benefits when eligible.
Skills: Applicant needs good communication and
interpersonal skills. An understanding of dunes ecology will be
helpful. Working knowledge of invasive species prevention, early
detection , containment and control techniques and an in-depth
understanding of the ecological impacts of invasives needed. Computer
knowledge, mapping skills and administration/record keeping abilities
are a must. Applicant should also be independent and a self-starter.
Working Conditions: Ability to meet deadlines.
Work requires physical exertion and/or muscle strain. Work involves
several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazards where
there is some possibility injury.

Seasonal Interpretive Naturalist
Vacancies
in Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs
Seasonal interpretive naturalist positions are available with the
Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks and
Reservoirs.
Salary/Benefits: The work week is 37.5 hours; the pay is
typically $10.84/hour. Housing is generally not provided, but camping
may be available for a reduced rate at some sites.
These positions typically begin in Mid-May and end on/about Labor Day.
Some sites may hire staff for longer seasons.
Duties: Following an intensive training session well known
for its thoroughness and practical application of interpretive
techniques (including an option to take NAI’s CIG course), seasonal
staff plan and present interpretive programs ranging from hikes and
talks to crafts and demonstrations for property visitors. At most
sites, they also staff and maintain public interpretive centers.
Assistance, evaluation and training are provided throughout the summer
by the Chief of Interpretation and by full-time field interpreters.
Qualifications: Job qualifications include 2 years of
degree work in interpretation (or equivalent experience in the field),
biology or related field, creativity, enthusiasm about natural/cultural
resources and about communicating with visitors (orally and in
writing), and the ability to work independently. Previous practical
field experience with a variety of age groups and program types is a
plus.
Locations: Positions are available at many sites,
including Turkey Run, Shades, Indiana Dunes, Tippecanoe River,
McCormick’s Creek, Brown County, Shakamak, Ouabache, and Whitewater
State Parks, and Brookville, Patoka, Salamonie, Mississinewa and Roush
Lakes. Vacancies may be available in other locations as well.
