Cross by John Mishler with arms outstreched-- Advent 2002 devotions

April. 9 - Song of Mercy

Contributed by Sr. Jacinta Krecek, the Roman Catholic campus minister on Wednesday April 09

Scripture

Philippians 2:5-11

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death--
even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Devotion

Mercy
rained down from heaven
like April showers,
drenching the barren fields of my life,
softening the furrows of my heart,
soaking the soil
to yield fresh creations.
Mercy
came to earth
cradled in a young mother’s arms,
whispering: small is big.
The little King sleeping near the cows
has power to turn my thinking
upside-down.

Mercy
rode a donkey to town one day
surrounded by victorious shouts,
“Blessed is the One who comes
in the name of the Lord!”
Yet, inside he cried,
weeping for the city
that closed its eyes to God.
Familiar with the ups and downs
of my fickle heart
that both sings praises and utters complaints,
only you can remove blindness
and reveal moments pulsating with meaning.

Mercy
walked the lonely road,
freely gave his body and his blood.
Nailed to the wood, poured to the last drop.
“Forgive… they don’t know what they do.”
Can I give “seventy time seven”
even when it hurts?
Live beyond understanding
with no revenge.
Let go!

Mercy
- the very face of God,
the story’s beginning and end.
Reign in me!
Let me always serve you.
“For the foolishness of God
is wiser than human wisdom
and the weakness of God
stronger than human strength” (1Cor 1:25).
