In the Psalms, we often find comfort in David’s expressions of his utterly human highs and lows, fears and joys, anger and salvation. We see there our own feelings and questions and joys. Yet, in light of the New Testament, we have an advantage over David – not exactly hindsight, but perhaps more of the story, yet unfinished.
David tells us to trust in God because the Lord created all things. In the New Testament, we know that God created all things through Christ.
He trusts in God who keeps faith forever. In Christ, God fulfilled his promises and is faithful to us. David knows that God brings justice to the oppressed, brings Jubilee – and we have Jesus’ words to describe his mission in Luke 4:
We put our trust in God because we have the glorious, powerful example of the birth of Christ to show us God’s reign on earth, continued, in each one of us. Here is where we can find deep trust in the God of Jacob, who keeps faith forever.
Even during difficult times – when we fear other human beings, when daily life is threatened, when countries are at war – we can find strength in God because a living ambassador was among us, to redeem us, to show us the worthiness of trusting in the Lord.
In each one of us, you are present.
Yet you also gave us this gift in Christ Jesus to understand you – so our human minds can try to begin to comprehend you in a familiar form… and be redeemed despite our small view of eternity.
Even when our lives are clouded with fear, pain, doubt… when our inner lives and that of our country rumble with conflict, we know we can turn to you.
In this season, we sing of our hope and our trust in the Lord, who keeps faith forever.
