Communication scholarships

The Communication and Theater Department recognizes outstanding students by awarding more than $50,000 in scholarships every year. Through generous endowments the department is able to offer scholarships to dozens of students, with annual awards ranging from $500 to $5,000. In 2002, the department introduced the Gorsline Excellence Awards, inviting talented high school seniors to compete for $4,000 scholarships in journalism, theater, and video/film/audio.

The scholarships include:

- Ainlay Communication Scholarship: a $5,000 award given to a senior who excels academically and displays leadership in the department.
- Geigley Scholarship: awards ranging from $500 to $1,500 for students who excel in broadcast communication or theater.
- Gorsline Scholarship: awards ranging from $500 to $2,500 for students who major in communication or theater, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership by their involvement in co-curriculars.
- Gorsline Excellence Award in Print Journalism: a $4,000 award given to a high school senior for journalistic achievement. Entries are accepted in three categories (news writing, feature writing and photography) and are judged by a panel of department members and professional journalists. The scholarship is renewable for four years.
- Gorsline Excellence Award in Theater: a $4,000 award given to a high school senior for acting achievement.
