Interview with Sandy

How did you find your internship?

My ASL professor found it for me. I wanted to be in a location where I could commute. Since I have children at home I did not want to be away for 10 weeks.

What were your major responsibilities?

Most of my responsibilities were interpreting at various locations. I also did some office work.

What’s an important thing you learned?

I learned that what I was taught in the classroom is the ideal and not the reality. It was a good way for me to become aware of those types of situations.

What do you wish someone had told you before you started your internship?

How much I would miss my classmates and the camaraderie that we shared. I missed their support; it was difficult.

What did you enjoy most?

I most enjoyed having the opportunity to interpret in a variety of settings and feeling my interpreting skills improve. I was happy that my professors were willing to work with me in accommodating my desire to commute to my intern site. It was a good and beneficial experience, but I was glad when it was over.
