When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My earliest modest ambitions were to be a farmer, although those aspirations evaporated when I had to thin peaches.

Why or how did you choose this field?

An early ideal was to pursue a career that explicitly was dedicated to helping others. I imagined psychology to be such a field.

What’s exciting about your job or this field?

Nothing can be more invigorating than life on a college campus. I am excited about getting to know new students and pursuing new ideas.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I am not one to be able to single out a best advice. I am more influenced by a consistent supporting community. I experienced that first hand, beginning with my good parents.

What are you really proud of?

The achievements of my children.

What would you do differently?

I would wish to have been more disciplined in how I pursue career goals.

What advice would you give to a young person just starting out?

Make sure you immerse yourself in a community that supports your passion.  Acquire that fire in the belly before you invest too much in a career pursuit.
