Hiring students for on-campus jobs

National studies indicate that students who work part-time on campus do as well (if not better) academically than their non-working peers.

At GC, we believe having a part-time position on-campus for no more than 10 hours a week is an important part of the educational process and provides students with another means to make a connection to campus, meet new people, and assist with their financial responsibilities.

Part-time employment also benefits students in developing skills and experience attractive to future employers, provides a greater understanding of the world of work, and increases confidence.

The same hiring procedures apply for both work-study and nonwork-study students.

Advertising your job opportunities

  • GC job & internship bank
All departments are strongly encouraged to post their available positions on the GC job & internship bank. Students often ask Career Services to assist them in finding on-campus positions. Having a central repository of all open positions is extremely helpful both for us and the students.

Click here to download instructions for the job bank. If you have questions or encounter any problems, don't hesitate to (7547).
  • First-year student handout
Incoming first-year students are provided with a list of departments who hire students. Students have expressed appreciation for this resource and many utilize it over the summer before even arriving on campus.

If your department is not included on this list and you would like it to be, please the information you would like included.
  • Part-time job fair
Career Services hosts a part-time job fair at the beginning of each school year. Both on- and off-campus employers are invited to participate.

Resources for department hiring managers

  • Job description template
A detailed job description helps your student understand expectations and it provides you with some structure when it's time to evaluate your worker.
  • Sample student employment application
Requiring a formal application can assist you in choosing the most qualified students to interview and it provides students practice in completing applications.
  • Sample interview questions
An interview will help you fill your position with the most qualified candidate and it can be great preparation for students in their future employment search.
  • Student employment manual
Career Services has developed an employment manual for departments to distribute to students employees. We recommend all department supervisors review the manual and become familiar with the content. Supervisors can download and print the manual or request copies from Career Services.
  • Hiring checklist & orientation
Student employees must complete paperwork from accounting and possibly from other departments. Use this checklist to ensure all documents have been completed.

  • Experience shows that departments who take time at the beginning to orient student employees reap productivity and effectiveness more quickly than those who do not. This checklist will assist supervisors in providing necessary information to new student employees.

  • Student employee evaluation form
Supervisors are required to complete an evaluation form and submit it to the VP for finance whenever a student is eligible for a wage raise (after every 225 hours of work).

We encourage supervisors to complete the form and review it with student employees at least once per school year regardless of raise eligibility.
