DESCRIPTION:Korean pianist and visiting artist Kwiran Lee will present a recital of solo piano music in Rieth Recital Hall on Tuesday\, January 29 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $7 adults\, $5 seniors/students\, available at the door one hour before the concert.  GC faculty/staff/students are free with ID.\n\nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, pianist Kwiran Lee has toured as a soloist and chamber musician. She studied piano at the Ewha Womans University under Young-Lim Ham and proceeded to win numerous prizes and awards.  In 1995 she moved to the United States to study at the Eastman School of Music. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts under Rebecca Penneys. While still a student\, Kwiran Lee performed for the Flaine Musique in France\, the Sejong Arts Center in Korea\, the Classic Live Conerts Series on WBFO in Buffalo\, New York.\n\nIn 2002 she moved to New Zealand and worked as soloist and accompanist. She has performed at the Great Hall of the Arts Centre in Christchurch\, Music Centre\, Rangiora Music Hall\, Akaroa Music Festival Hall and many other places.  As a chamber musician she has performed with Jan Tawroszewicz\, Edith Salzmann\, Mario de Secondi and Anatoly Zelinsky.\n\nIn 2006 Kwiran returned to her native country Korea and has given recitals of important Korean music halls such as Seoul Arts Center\, Kumho Arts Center\, Youngsan Art Hall and Sungnam Art Center. She performed premieres of number of important contemporary Korean works for piano by Kyung-Ja Kim and Okmi Han.  Kwiran has been teaching at the Ewha Womans University since 2006.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Philpott\, Associate Professor of Political Science and Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies\, University of Notre Dame\, will speak about "Reconciliation in Politics? On the Meaning of Justice in the Wake of Massive Injustice."\n\nIn the wake of massive injustice\, how can justice be achieved and peace restored? Drawing from his recent book\, "Just and Unjust Peace: An Ethic of Political Reconciliation\," Daniel Philpott offers an innovative and hopeful response to this questions. He challenges the approach to peace-building that dominates the United Nations\, western governments\, and the human rights community. While he shares their commitments to human rights and democracy\, Philpott argues that these values alone cannot redress the wounds caused by war\, genocide\, and dictatorship. Both justice and the effective restoration of political order call for a more holistic\, restorative approach. Philpott answers that call by proposing a form of political reconciliation that is deeply rooted in three religious traditions--Christianity\, Islam\, and Judaism--as well as the restorative justice movement. These traditions offer the fullest expressions of the core concepts of justice\, mercy\, and peace. By adapting these ancient concepts to modern constitutional democracy and international norms\, Philpott crafts an ethic that has widespread appeal and offers real hope for the restoration of justice in fractured communities. From the roots of these traditions\, Philpott develops six practices--building just institutions and relations between states\, acknowledgment\, reparations\, restorative punishment\, apology and\, most important\, forgiveness--which he then applies to real cases\, identifying how each practice redresses a unique set of wounds.

He obtained his MD at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Case Western in Cleveland.  He recieved his fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute in Miami\, FL.  He now resides in Goshen with his wife\, Rachel\, and three daughters.  He practices orthopaedics as part of OSMC\, working both in Goshen and Elkhart.  He has been involved in treating athletes at Goshen College's training room since returning to Goshen and volunteers at the Center for Healing and Hope.

We will explore an 80-year-old field of mathematics and computer science known as "computability."  The goal of computability is simple: which problems can be solved in an "effective" manner.  Usually\, this boils down to determining for which problems does there exist an algorithm to solve them.  For example: suppose we have a polynomial with integer coefficients.  Is there a sure-fire way to determine whether or not its roots are all rational numbers or not?  It turns out that there is no such algorithm\, and this is an "undecidable" problem!\n\nWe will give the basics of computability through the idea of Turing machines.  Focusing on functions on the natural numbers\, we will explore some "computable" functions and "non-computable" functions.  We will give a bit of historical context for computability\, giving examples of how it has affected mathematics and computer science. The college?s student club EcoPAX will harvest dandelion greens on April 10-11 from campus prairies that have had no pesticides sprayed for the last 2 years (so they are safe for consumption) and then the AVI Fresh Dining Hall chef Jeremy Corson has agreed to prepare them for the lunch on April 12.\n\nThis project is an attempt to ?make peace with dandelions.? These dark leafy greens are full of vitamin A\, C and K\, making them very nutritious. A mathematical model (HH-model) that describes how action potentials are produced within neurons was derived by Hodgkin and Huxley through experiments on squid.  The HH model is based on a  system of nonlinear ordinary differentialequations\, so we may think of a neuron as a nonlinear dynamical system. In this talk\, we present the HH-model and simplifications of the HH model including the Fitzhugh-Nagumo model and the integrate-and-fire model.
