DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Sacred Soil is the theme for Merry Lea's 2007 Autumn Hope Conference. For most of us\, food comes from the grocery store. This event will remind us that food comes from the soil and from God. With help from a pastor\, a farmer\, a chef\, an agroecologist and several naturalists\, we will explore the ways in which our nourishment depends on healthy soil. The food we eat will be local food: grown at Merry Lea and nearby farms. One hour of academic credit is available for a course based on this conference through Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary\, Elkhart\, IN. Outside readings\, papers and one additional meeting required.Registration: $75; $20 GC students. Lodging available at Merry Lea for an additional $15/night. Please register by September 14.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Professor of Art at the University of Kansas Carol Ann Carter is the 2007-08 Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist.\n\nCarter’s creative work which began in intaglio printmaking\, advanced to mixed media painting and fiber construction in 1984. She is currently working in multimedia installation - performance\, mixed media and digital imaging and video. Carter is also interested in collaboration across cultures and disciplines in the arts.\n\nOf her work she states: The objects and spaces I utilize\, suggest the creative field in which I play my work. It is a field of art and design where I practice movement and exchange of elements across boundaries. I am motivated by the dialogues among materials\, intelligence or disciplines-by a kind of character conversion where one thing influences or develops by virtue of occupying space with another: red and green pigment meant for a painting\, find their way to a chair...or when foot pain assists\, over time\, in the development of a shoe form. The field for these considerations--for this activity-- is wide open."\n\nCarter was born in Indianapolis\, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Herron School of Art of Indiana University\, and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame.\n\nA reception will follow her lecture from 8-9 p.m. The exhibit\, reception and lecture are free and open to the public. An exhibit of her works will be on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery from Oct. 21-Nov. 29.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Wednesday\, February 20th\, has been named Tuition Free Day. Celebratory activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Dining Hall and the Union. This date is approximately two-thirds of the way through the academic year\, and represents the point at which revenue from tuition and fees stops covering educational costs. The goal of Tuition Free Day is three-fold: 1) to raise awareness that tuition/fees only cover about 65% of the costs2) to celebrate that thousands of alumni and friends of the college financially support Goshen College 3) to motivate students to consider "giving back" to GC as alumni. DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Recently much verbiage has emerged to characterize faculty efforts at teaching in more systematic and evidence-based ways. "Effective Teaching\," "Scholarly Teaching\," and "the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" all have specific meanings and connotations that may not be readily accessible to faculty. In this workshop\, CITL Curriculum Director Ross Peterson-Veatch will demystify the term "Scholarly Teaching" and lead participants in a conversation that will encompass the conceptualization\, design\, and assessment of a possible project that would support faculty in documenting the effectiveness of their teaching and could demonstrate their engagement in Scholarly Teaching. \n\nParticipants will have the opportunity to begin formulating a "research question" that might drive their inquiry about teaching practice in their discipline and will converse about the many benefits involved in Scholarly Teaching. A primary benefit of using this research-like approach to documenting one's teaching is that it streamlines preparation for publication on teaching and teaching effectiveness.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:In this culmination of the May Term Musical Theater class\, the GC music and theater departments collaborate through the direction of Debra Brubaker and Doug Liechty Caskey to bring you the stories\, dances and songs of pioneer women that lead to the creation of their quilts. \n\nOstensibly the story of a pioneer woman and her six daughters\, "Quilters" blends a series of interrelated scenes into a rich mosaic which captures the sweep and beauty\, the terror and joy\, the harsh challenge and abiding rewards\, of frontier life. The action depicts the lot of women on the frontier: girlhood\, marriage\, childbirth\, spinsterhood\, twisters\, fire\, illness and death. But\, with this\, there is also love\, warmth\, rich and lively humor\, and the moving spectacle of simple human dignity and steadfastness in the face of adversity. In the end\, when the various patches are assembled into one glorious\, brilliantly colorful quilt\, the effect is both breathtaking and magical - and a theatrical masterstroke which will linger in the mind and memory long after the house lights have dimmed.\n\nTickets cost adults\, seniors/students.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:CITL and The Mininger Center will be hosting a Course DevelopmentInstitute (CDI) during the week of Memorial Day - May 27-30. This eventwill use an Integrated Course Design model to support faculty in developingnew courses or revising courses they have already taught and are planningto teach next year. Participants should choose one course to work onthat they will be teaching next year and focus on that course during theCDI. The course can be any course a CDI participant teaches - it does not have to bedirectly related to the CITL's goals. We will meet from 9:00 am - 12:00pm daily to hear brief presentations and work in small groups givingeach other feedback on course materials. Participants will be free to work ontheir course in the afternoon hours on their own. More information will be available about the CDI as the time approaches. There are a limited number of seats in this Institute\, soplease contact Ross Peterson-Veatch at rosspv@goshen.edu if you plan to be a part of thisyear's CDI. Again\, the time commitment is 9-12 daily\, with significantwork on your own in the afternoons.
