If you own a digital camera\, bring it and the instruction book along to class. DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:During the 2006-07 school year\, Goshen College Professor of Art Merrill Krabill spent his sabbatical working with mixed media pieces\, particularly ceramics and photography\, that explore boundaries. He writes in his artist statement: "This latest body of work shows itself in images that are light (in value and weight) combined with sculptural forms that are solid and heavy. I think of the pieces as being at the boundary between two places. They often have elements that seem gate or window-like—passageways."\n\nThe reception will be held on Friday\, Oct. 5\, coinciding with Homecoming Weekend\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Chapel title: "Spiritual Whiplash" - Shane went from ad-guy-driving-fast-cars to Mennonite pastor. Hear why he blames the dangerous cocktail of God’s call and the draw of Anabaptist faith for his whiplash. \n\n Shane Hipps\, pastor and author (www.shanehipps.com)\, will be on our campus as a pastor-in-residence and presenter of themes from his book\, "The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture: How Media Shapes Faith\, The Gospel\, and Church" from September 26-29\, 2007. Shane pastor of Trinity Mennonite Church in Glendale\, Arizona and lives close by with his wife\, Andrea and daughter\, Harper. \n\nBefore earning a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary\, he was a strategic planner in advertising where he worked on a variety of national brands. The majority of his time was spent developing and implementing the multimillion dollar communications strategy for Porsche Cars North America. It was here that he first gained experience in understanding media and culture.\n\nShane is a member and presenter for the Media Ecology Association\, an organization of scholars and laypeople who investigate the impact of communication technology and media on cultures and individuals. He is also a featured essayist for the award winning metaphilm.com\, a website devoted to cultural critique and film interpretation.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Sacred Soil is the theme for Merry Lea's 2007 Autumn Hope Conference. For most of us\, food comes from the grocery store. This event will remind us that food comes from the soil and from God. With help from a pastor\, a farmer\, a chef\, an agroecologist and several naturalists\, we will explore the ways in which our nourishment depends on healthy soil. The food we eat will be local food: grown at Merry Lea and nearby farms. One hour of academic credit is available for a course based on this conference through Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary\, Elkhart\, IN. Outside readings\, papers and one additional meeting required.Registration: $75; $20 GC students. Lodging available at Merry Lea for an additional $15/night. Please register by September 14.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Dr. David Bartel of the Whitehead Institute/MIT/HHMI is a GC grad who will be receiving a Culture for Service award during our Alumni Weekend. His research deals with small RNAs that silence genes. His lab uses a combination of biochemical\, molecular\, genetic\, and computational approaches to identify additional genes\, explore their roles in regulating eukaryotic gene expression\, and determine the molecular mechanisms of their action. His discoveries have been cited in some of our biology texts and in many molecular biology research articles. He has been the recipient of several major international awards recognizing his work. This is a great opportunity to learn about cutting edge research from one who is an international leader in genetics and molecular biology.

DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Sarah Thiessen is a 2007 graduate who has worked on our yeast molecular genetics project for multiple years using DNA microarray technology to locate a mutant gene. She joined the team as a Maple Scholar in the summer of 2006\, helped the Molecular Cell Biology class learn about DNA microarrays in the Spring of 2007\, and then returned during the summer of 2007. Her work has resulted in tentatively identifying the mutant suppressor of potassium transport deficiency we have sought for several years. The gene appears to be one that codes for a symporter of glycerol phosphate and protons which has gained the ability to transport potassium ions. This report will also be presented at the Indiana Academy of Science meeting in Indianapolis in late October and will contain information about the use of DNA microarray technology in college classes. We hope to receive your comments about any improvements following the presentation here.

In light of this situation\, chapel will be an opportunity for us to hear reflections from Marty Lehman and Rod Hollinger-Janzen about how U.S. State Department policies are affecting the global church and why we should care about building relationships with the African church\, in particular. \n\nJoin us for a service of African song\, reflection\, and prayer as we consider our place in the global church. We will have opportunity for everyone to sign a letter of support for Swana Sidonie\, as well as letters of protest addressed to the State Department. \n\nMs. Swana Sidonie is a chaplain at the Christian University of Kinshasa (http://upcpublicrelations.org) and secretary of the Association of Mennonite Women Theologians of Congo (ATMCO). DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Professor of Art at the University of Kansas Carol Ann Carter is the 2007-08 Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist. An exhibit reception will be held from 8-9 p.m.\, following her 7 p.m. lecture in Rieth Recital Hall. The exhibit\, reception and lecture are free and open to the public. An exhibit of her works will be on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery from Oct. 21-Nov. 29.\n\nCarter’s creative work which began in intaglio printmaking\, advanced to mixed media painting and fiber construction in 1984. She is currently working in multimedia installation - performance\, mixed media and digital imaging and video. Carter is also interested in collaboration across cultures and disciplines in the arts.\n\nOf her work she states: The objects and spaces I utilize\, suggest the creative field in which I play my work. It is a field of art and design where I practice movement and exchange of elements across boundaries. I am motivated by the dialogues among materials\, intelligence or disciplines-by a kind of character conversion where one thing influences or develops by virtue of occupying space with another: red and green pigment meant for a painting\, find their way to a chair...or when foot pain assists\, over time\, in the development of a shoe form. The field for these considerations--for this activity-- is wide open."\n\nCarter was born in Indianapolis\, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Herron School of Art of Indiana University\, and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame.
