Maple Scholars Program Details

Faculty proposals are approved and posted for students to see in early January. If students are interested in applying they are expected to contact the faculty member to learn more and for the faculty member to know about their interest. Student applications are due (send to the science secretary) near the first of February. The students for each project are chosen by the faculty or staff who made the proposal.

The scholars are announced in late February or Early March. The program begins right after May term and runs for 8 weeks until a Friday in the middle of July.

Students receive a taxable stipend of $4,000. Teaching faculty mentors receive a stipend of $1400.

Students are all housed on campus in a small group type of housing arrangement. There is no cost to the students except that they provide their own meals. This living arrangement is part of the program and is encouraged for all students in order to create a strong sense of a community of scholars.

Students work directly with their faculty mentor on their project during most of the week according a schedule that is mutually agreed upon. In addition to working on their own projects, students are encouraged to occasionally visit other students working Maple Scholar projects.

Each Friday morning all faculty and student participants gather for the Colloquium in which students and faculty take turns describing the work they are doing. Generally presentations are about 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions and transition. About half of the projects give presentations each week.

At the end of the program, the final Friday afternoon is a public presentation. Most students give poster presentations but a few chosen by the students give oral presentations. In the evening is a banquet for the students, faculty and their guests.
