Developing Supervisory Leadership Part I

September 29 - November 3, 2009
4:00-5:45 p.m.
Newcomer Center Room 13 - Goshen College

If you are a newly appointed supervisor or if you have had years of supervisory leadership experience and just want to sharpen your skills, you will want to participate in this special class.  You will meet with other supervisors to learn how to improve leadership skills and enhance your contribution to the success of your organization.

 Course Outline:

Our purpose is to explore the various styles of leadership used by supervisors to address a number of key issues faced in guiding their work group to the achievement of the organization's goals and objectives.

Course fee is $289 per person, or $269 per person if three or more from the same company register together.  Fee includes the Newstrom text Supervision: Managing For Results, ninth edition, and study materials.  The same text will be used in Part II.

September 29:  Origin of an Enterprise, the Basics

If supervisors are to lead and perform their special role effectively, they must understand how and why organizations are formed, as well as the foundational beliefs and values that led to their mission, vision, goals and objectives, policies and procedures.

October 6:  Functions and Principles of Management

To be effective, supervisors must know and apply the basic functions and principles of management in everything they do to ensure support of the organization's goals and objectives as well as success in their personal lives.

 October 13:  The Organization

Organizations are made up of people who are to work together to accomplish common goals. The principle of organization applies to materials and equipment as well as people, and the purpose of organization in each incidence is synergy. How do leaders organize?

October 20:  The Art and Science of Leadership

For the organization to be effective, the supervisor must lead by both living and "selling" the philosophy, mission, vision, goals and objectives, policies and procedures. The ability to do this is based on character, knowledge and effective interpersonal communication. What must one be and do to lead effectively?

October 27:  Controlling Safety, Quality and Productivity

Profit or loss is a result, not the primary focus of the supervisor. How do safety, quality and productivity contribute to profit and how does the supervisor lead to accomplish these three top priorities? What are the measurements of effectiveness and how does one become more successful?

November 3:  Business Simulation: My Department is My Company

This session reviews the results of the participants' six week project, based on a worksheet where they are guided to look at their area, department or plant as an independent business owned by them. If it was your capital at risk, could you afford to continue to operate as you do? If not, what would have to change and how would you do that?

Instructor: David A.
