If you are a newly appointed supervisor or if you have had years of supervisory leadership experience and just want to sharpen your skills, you will want to participate in this special class. You will meet with other supervisors to learn how to improve leadership skills and enhance your contribution to the success of your organization.


Developing Supervisory Leadership Part I

New class beginning September 23, 2008

Course Outline:

Our purpose is to explore the various styles of leadership used by supervisors to address a number of key issues faced in guiding their work groups to the achievement of the organization's goals and objectives.  Special emphasis is placed on understanding how and why organizations come into being; how they function; the role of goal setting, planning, organizing, leading and controlling; and the supervisor's role as leader based on an ability to understand people and communicate effectively.  Course fee is $289 per person, or $269 per person if three or more from the same company register together.  Payable to Goshen College. Fee includes the Newstrom text Supervision: Managing For Results, ninth edition, and study materials.  The text will also be used in Part II.

Instructor: David A. Bontrager is a human resources executive and consultant with more than 30 years of human resources management experience with NIBCO, The Marmon Group, Brown Corp., Goshen Rubber Co. and Western Rubber. He started as an hourly employee in NIBCO’s foundry in 1958, moved into supervision and eventually held the top human resources position in the corporation from 1979 to 1986. An experienced instructor, Dave has taught management courses for Purdue University, Goshen College, Ivy Tech and Vincennes University. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Hanover College, a master’s degree from Ball State and has done post-graduate work at Iowa and Notre Dame Universities.
