The BIRDS & MAMMALS

of Witmer Woods

Although few in number, rabbits and black birds are among the wild inhabitants of Witmer Woods.

Dead Bird

This bird was found in a forested area under a shrub. The species was not identified. The cause of its death and the amount of time it rested there is unknown. While finding dead birds is uncommon, it is not uncommon, especially in the spring time to find the broken shells of freshly hatched eggs.

Although our group heard birds and saw indicators that animals lived on the non-road side of the plot, it is not surprising that we did not see many animals because of the proximity of the plot to the road and its narrow length along the road.

Holes in the Ground

Right alongside a forested area, these three holes were found in the sandy soil. Their maker(s) is unknown at this time. The soil around the holes was uneven as if an animal had burrowed just underneath the grassy surface.
