An entry must be submitted between March 1 and June 15. 2008.

Linked above you'll find the YSC Contest Overview and a Nomination Certificate for coaches. Participating in the competition is FREE and optional! The YSC seeks the best young science communicator in the nation - a skill valued by Science Olympiad as well. The ability to communicate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts in layman's terms to a wide audience - in person, not just in writing - is a valuable skill in today's world.

While the YSC is indeed open to all children in grades 5-8 nationwide, in recognition of the partnership with Science Olympiad, Discovery is giving Science Olympiad one guaranteed spot in the Top 10 and a 10% chance of winning the Grand Prize of a $50,000 savings bond (worth $25K) and a free trip to Washington DC in Fall 2008.

Each Science Olympiad coach will have the opportunity to present the attached "Nomination Certificate" to up to two (2) students on each team who will automatically bypass the first round of online judging. They will, by virtue of submitting their entry, be considered Quarterfinalists. Once nominated, students should go to www.discoveryeducation.com/youngscientist and register for the competition. Students will have until June 15 to submit a one- to two-minute video entry to the YSC on any one of six space-related topics outlined in the attached overview. Teachers may have students submit applications or ideas for selection, choose students on their merit, or use a lottery system to select the eligible nominees. Discovery Education officials will cross-reference the state tournament lists against submissions.

Any additional Science Olympiad students choosing to enter this contest will go through the regular channels of judging.

For any questions about the contest, please email: YSC@discovery.com.

Robotics Workshops for Science Olympiad Coaches

2008

Come join fellow science, mathematics and technology teachers from around your region at a free, 3-day, 7-12 teacher workshop that will focus on robotics as a teaching tool for the classroom. The nationally recognized workshop is hosted by faculty and competitive robotics mentors from Ivy Tech Community College. The workshop will introduce teachers to a standards-based robotics curriculum with an emphasis on math and science. These workshops will provide teachers with a hands-on approach to learning new methodologies and teaching strategies for implementation into the classroom. It will also provide a non-threatening and fun opportunity to practice these new skills and methodologies that culminates in a competition on the last day of the workshop.

Participants will take away a Vex Robotics Starter Kit, a curriculum CD and material binder, Autodesk Inventor software and other donated materials to use in their classrooms.

Workshops will take place at the local Ivy Tech Community College campus in the following cities:

Evansville June 9-11

Bloomington June 16-18

Sellersburg June 23-25

Indianapolis July 7-9

Columbus July 14-16

Valparaiso July 21-23
