Department mission

To promote Christian stewardship of biological resources, in both natural and human forms. Prepare servant leaders for the church and world, with the broad background in biology necessary for biology related jobs or further training in biology related areas.

Vision

To develop, maintain and promote a program that achieves the departmental mission, including these goals:

In all of our programs: Promote understanding of the scientific process, and a Christian view of the stewardship of resources available through the application of the scientific method.

In all areas: Support the Goshen College educational mission and desired outcomes, in particular, the ability to communicate effectively using a variety of sign systems; the ability to think actively and strategically; promote understanding of responsible stewardship for human systems as well as the environment; develop a sense of vocational direction.

Support and maintain contacts with the Christian church in general, our Mennonite Church constituency, and the larger Goshen community.

Provide a diverse and up-to-date program that prepares students to enter the job market or graduate school in BIOLOGY, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY (Biochemistry), and BIOTECHNOLOGY.

Offer strong class and laboratory sessions that develop the technical and more general biological understandings needed for students preparing for science related professional programs such as MEDICINE, NURSING, PHYSICAL THERAPY, MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY, OPTOMETRY, VETERINARY MEDICINE and others.

Maintain a strong program in ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY, ECOLOGY and FIELD BIOLOGY.
