    fired in Goshen College gas kiln 

    This is a Shino type glaze also known as a carbon trap glaze.  Soluble soda in the glaze forms a scum on the glaze surface as it evaporates after glazing.  It melts first and traps the reduction carbon beneath it during the firing.
