November 28 – February 19 The Goshen College Art Club & Art Department brings you a special thematic Student Art Exhibit. This year’s theme is “Recycled” and all student-submitted pieces must represent this theme in some form. The guidelines entrants had to follow were: Each work must be original in concept and execution and created this year. All media except digital productions were acceptable. Entries must not exceed five feet.

Inherited Quilts, 2013

A wide variety of vintage and antique quilts, mostly Mennonite and Amish, that have been inherited from friends and relatives by members of the group Mennonite Women, who meet monthly at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, to quilt and do other handwork to support charitable causes. The exhibit includes quilting accessories and a few antique blanket chests. Curated by Rebecca Haarer. Sponsored by the Mennonite-Amish Museum Committee. Reception Sunday, April 7, 2-4 p.m.

Heritage Works, 2013

Paintings by Abner Hershberger, Emeritus Professor of Art at Goshen College, that explore historical Mennonite and agrarian themes by manipulating images from the family photo album. Small black and white photos were enlarged to provide industrial-sized negatives, which allowed life-size images to be screen-printed on individual canvases. Grandmother’s Flower Garden: Floral Design in Mennonite and Amish Quilts Antique and contemporary quilts by Mennonite and Amish makers, using both geometric and naturalistic flower motifs. The exhibit is a tribute to the traditional design known as “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” that has become one of the most popular patterns in the history of American quilt-making.
