Soap Dish AutoCAD Drawing and Design Assignment

This is a beginning drawing assignment based on your own design for a soap dish. This the the beginning of the assignment to be based your sketch ideas based on criteria listed by us in class. Additions to this assignment are given in class. In the end we will have everything needed so that it could be produced directly from your drawings.

Objectives
  • One grade will be based on originality, expressiveness, and functionality of the soap dish.
  • The second grade with be based on the drafting.

Include

Include a top view, front edge view, and an end view. All views are drawn actual size.

Include a border with title block with title of drawing, your name, scale, date, file name, Goshen College, 214 Drafting and Design, Bartel, inst.

How to draw it in AutoCAD
  1. Set your UNITS to Fractions and sheet LIMITS to 0,0 at lower left and 11,8.5 at upper right.
  2. If your soap dish is large, you may find that you need more room. Use LIMITS twice as big (upper right becomes 22,17) with the border 1 inch from the edge instead of 1/2 inch from the edge. But you still draw everything actual size. Use a scale of 1=2 when printingFORMAT, LAYERS with 0 layer WHITE (make this layer CURRENT when drawing the soap dish).
  3. Make a TEXT layer RED (make it current when adding text)
  4. Make any other layers you need.
  5. Set Grid and Snap as you wish.
  6. FORMAT, TEXT, using ROMANS font (try .125 or 1/8 for size) if you are planning for 1 to 1 scale (.25 if you are planning to print at 1 = 2 scale).

Hints for getting started with AutoCAD
  1. Enter all lines by an exact method using the keyboard, osnap, or snap.  If you use a free mouse entry method for drafting, none of the dimensions will be correct and lines will not actually meet at corners.
  2. From the solar system to a microscopic view, all computer drafting is done actual size no matter how large or small the subject is.  You create the scaled drawing when you print, but not while drawing.
  3. Always be sure to have Model Space selected (bottom center of screen) while working on the drawing.  If Paper Space is selected, you can only work on the border and title block of the drawing.
  4. All commands are completed by using Enter or Carriage Return or the Space Bar or the Right mouse button. The most recent command is also invoked by any of these ways.
  5. F1 is Help.  Learn to use it.
  6. If you make a mistake, use the UNDO or U command or the backup arrow button on the menu or use E for erase.
  7. A commen Zoom command is Z, W which allows you to draw a window around the parts you want to enlarge. To go back, use Z, P (zoom previous) or Z, A (zoom, all).  There are buttons in the top tool bar for this.
  8. If you forget to set the right layer to CURRENT while you are working, use MODIFY, PROPERTIES, to select and change anything you entered in the wrong layer.
  9. To make corrections on a line of text, type in the comamd: ddedit
  10. To change the size of a line of text, try using MODIFY, SCALE from the top menu.
  11. Try using M or the move button with the crossing arrows to move text or anything else if needed.
  12. Try using Offset to duplicate a line a certain distance from an existing line.
  13. F8 key forces Otho on or off. Ortho makes only vertical and horizontal lines. You can also click the buttons on the bottom of the screen to turn some things on and off.
  14. F9 key turns Snap on or off.  You set the snap to any interval.
  15. F7 turns Grid on and off.

Other more complex assignments, also based on your own designs, will be distributed in class.
