Learning Tasks for Advanced Ceramics Students

1. Mix your own clay. Store it in your own can. You may team with another student.
    Put your name on a sticker on the side of the can. Do not write on our cans.

2. Be in charge of one loading, firing and unloading of the gas kiln for a glaze firimg.
    First review by assisting another student. Have an experienced student or assistant you can consult when you are in charge of firing. Carefully, instruct the beginning students who help.

3. Supervise beginning students in the mixing of at least one batch of class clay. Do not do the work yourself.
    Emphasize SAFETY and dust prevention. Explain the function of each ingredient. They are tested.

4. Load and fire the electric kiln whenever you have work to fire. Include other work to fill the kiln.
    First review by assisting another student. Have another student you can consult when you are in charge of firing. Carefully, instruct the beginning students who help.

5. Mix glaze when you need it or supervise beginning students who mix glaze.
    Follow the posted procedures. Make 5,000 to 8,000 grams of commonly used glazes. If it is not a commonly used glaze, first ask about the batch size needed.

6. Special clean-up in addition to cleaning your own areas after you work. Find a partner and work together.
    Spend at least 30 minutes cleaning some area of the room at least once during the term. Find a friend and work together.

7. Find a relevant Internet site and share it with the instructor and the class. This should not be a site already listed on the Ceramics Links page.
    Your site should give images or information useful to our work in this class. Give a short description and critique of the website.  Send the URL to the instructor for distribution to others in ceramics classes.

8. Conduct glaze research. Required for three credit students in 306 or any student in 404 who has not previously done it.
