I grew up in Arlington, Texas, but moved to the city of Goshen during 8th grade. Growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of education and told me that college was not a choice, it was a necessity. I always envisioned myself attending a large university such as the ones portrayed by the media. I was a first generation college student and so I had no idea that there were different kinds of colleges out there. My neighbor, Dr. Odelet Nance, was, at the time, director of multicultural affairs at Goshen College. She would always encourage my older sister and I to visit GC. My sister and I would make fun and joke about attending a private Christian school. One day Dr. O convinced us to visit the campus and we were enthralled. It had such a hospitable and friendly atmosphere that was unique. My sister came to GC and a few years later I followed suit. I can’t imagine having a better experience anywhere else!
