Review photographers from videos, visiting artists, field trips, assignments, and text.
Some of these are Mary Ellen Mark, Diane Arbus, Gordon Parks, Jerry Uelsmann, Duane Michals, Jan Groover, Ansel Adams, and others (check back for more names).

If you can't find the answers, you may ask questions in class to clarify.

1.a. What are the most common commands in Adobe Photoshop used to enhance and manipulate images? Know about the commands covered in chapter 12 of the text.
1.b. If you have a course image with too few pixels or one that is too grainy looking, how what Photoshop filters could be used to make a duplicate layer of it look more gummy (smoother, but not sharp)? Then how could it be made to appear sharper? (review this in Photoshop Bible)
2. What is meant by truth in photography and in what situations is it ethical to manipulate photographic images?
3. Know and understand the concepts of zone focusing and the concepts of the zone system. They are totally different concepts and have totally different purposes in photography.
4. Know about metering, exposure, and lighting ratios for a portrait. Be able to use a gray card and meter shadows areas. Be able to transpose a fast shutter speed to a slow shutter speed without changing exposure. Be able to change from deep depth of field to selective focus without changing exposure.
5. Know how to bracket depth of field and know how to bracket exposure.
6. Know how to process film that has been intentionally overexposed for finer grain and softer tone. Know how to develop film for more contrast. Know how to develop film that is accidently underexposed. How will it look different than correctly exposed and processed film?
7. Know how to enhance a print with contrast filters when the negative has too much contrast and/or when it has too little contrast. What could you do in the darkroom when most of the negative has the correct contrast, but only a face needs more contrast (not lighter or darker).
8. Know how to fix an enlarger that has only partial coverage and one that doesn't focus equally on all parts of a print. How can a good sharp print be made even if you can't fix the enlarger?
9. Know the relationship of lens focal length and distance from the subject to depth of field.
10. Know how to use the zone focusing numbers on a camera lens.
11. Know the effects of time and temperature on developer effectiveness related to paper developer (Dektol).
12. Be able to explain the concepts of an automatic flash and what adjustments are needed to get the exposure right. How is manual flash different?
13. Why is a fast shutter speed impossible with a single lens reflex camera and flash.
14. Which is faster, flash or shutter?
15. What factors make a strong photograph?
16. What are the various types of photography?
17. What are the various reasons photographs are made?
18. What camera filters are often used in black and white photography? Why?
19. What happens if fixer contaminates the developer?
